Ko Phi Phi Part 3: The highs and lows

6/21

We again didn't do much today. On the evening before, we had decided to do the obligatory beach party thing (watching more fire dancing, ), thus in the morning we needed some recuperation and laid low. Our main events today were to eat, rest, and sign up for an all-day boat tour thingy for the next day. Woooooo.

6/22

At 9:30 we arrived at the tour office where we'd reserved our tickets and showed the reciept to the people there. They ushered us to the back to wait a few minutes, until another man arrived and we were handd off to him to follow to another office closer to the pier.

At this office we met a british couple who were signing up for the same tour, and once everything was settled we all marched off following some guy to the boat.

The boat was a large double-decker thing with dolphins painted on it. Inside we met a few more people, basically all of them couples oddly enough, and eventually the boat departed. Among the tourists were a pair of guys from SoCal (not one of the aforementioned couples...as far as I know), so that was cool to meet some fellow Californians.

Our first stop was Maya Bay, which we stopped outside of and had to paddle ourselves in on kayaks. Many many other tourists were there, and honestly the beach was pretty disappointing because of the crowds. Nice place otherwise, with a great view and lovely sand.

Then we rowed back to the boat and went to...somewhere...where we donned snorkeling masks and looked down at some fishes. The "reef" was in a pretty sad state, unfortunately, but there were still fishes and occasional other things down there. Not a lot of variety, though, compared to what I remember seeing in Hawaii ages ago.

Then we drove past Viking Cave which is a big cave in the side of an island.

At this point we motored back to Ko Phi Phi Don (main island) and dropped off half-day people (just a few people departed) and took on a second serving of half-day people for the second half. these people didn't really socialize with us, and pretty much just sunbathed at the front of the boat the entire time...meanwhile the whole-day people at a lunch of fried rice provided by the boat.

Our first stop on the second half was Monkey Beach, which is a beach that has monkeys on it. Mainly though, we snorkeled off the coast here and had a pretty similar experience to the first spot.

Then we went to some other beach, this one again covered in tourists. It was a very large beach, no idea where it was or what it was called though. Again we kayaked in. The sand was coarser and you could see lots of dead corals washing in and being broken down into new sand. There were little...pine trees of some kind. Here we had a sad setback when we went to kayak back to the boat and lost our provided snorkeling mask, which cost money. Which was extra-lame because there was no point in even bringing them out to this beach because visibility was like 1 meter in the water :(

Then we cruised for a long time back toward the main island, but stopped off shore at Shark Point for one last bit of snorkeling. This was definitely the best spot with the most variety of life (no sharks though). We had to look one at a time though, since we only had one mask between us! It was pretty nice though to finally see a less depressing reef.

And with that the tour was done. We debarked at the ferry pier and went home to shower and get all the mucky salt off of us. We each got a tad burned from the sun, but not bad at all. Overall it was a very nice day...up to that point.

We had dinner at a regular spot we'd been to, Basil Bistro.

Well...I don't want to burden you with details, but I was pretty sick last night, and even Christian barely slept because party peeps around us were slamming doors and shouting periodically until 4 AM.

6/23

I stayed in bed all day today feeling sick.

Christian also slept a lot, we were both quite lazy. Christian did actual work though, planning hostels and ferries and attractions for later, while I just wallowed in misery and ate Ritz crackers. Hence why I haven't bothered putting in any pictures in this blog because I'm incredibly lazy today. Rest assured we did take pics though. You can see some on Christian's Instagram.

We have a ferry ride scheduled for 1:30 pm tomorrow, so hopefully I'm feeling good by then. I am optimistic, given how today went by, that things will be under control enough for transit. But who knows what the night will bring.

Anyway, that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Til next time.
